WHAT IS VAN INSURANCE?

If you drive a vehicle in the UK then it is a legal requirement to have insurance. Like car insurance, van insurance can protect you and your vehicle against the cost of potential accident and damage.

Van drivers especially need the right insurance package for added peace of mind against potential financial and business loss. Van insurance can be personalised by opting for extra cover policies, which include protection for your cargo and equipment.

TYPES OF VAN INSURANCE

Choosing the correct insurance is crucial to ensure that you have the right type of cover for your circumstances. Firstly, you need to decide how you use your van and the purpose of it. Is it for private or commercial use? Business or pleasure? Next, decide which insurance package best suits your circumstances.

Social, domestic & pleasure

This is the package for you if your van is used for activities such as shopping, going on holiday and for hobbies such as mountain biking or surfing.

This insurance does not cover the commute to and from a place of work.

Carriage of own goods

This is the ideal insurance for a local tradesperson. Somebody who uses their van for work and transporting tools.

You might want to consider taking out additional tool theft insurance as well.

Courier

This is the best insurance if you are a delivery driver as it covers the cargo if it is lost, damaged or stolen: referred to as a ‘goods in transit policy’.

Haulier

If you are delivering goods a long distance, normally to one destination, this is the insurance you will need. It benefits those who are at a greater risk from spending longer on the roads.

It might be worth checking out insurance to cover goods in transit too.

TYPES OF COVER

There are three levels of van insurance to choose from. Legally, you only need to have third party cover, however, this level of insurance cover won't offer you, or your van, any protection.

Compare different types of cover to find the level of protection that you feel most comfortable with for you and your business.

Third Party Only

Advantages

  • Usually the cheapest type of insurance
  • Covers all third parties in the event of damage, injury or loss of life due to accident

Disadvantages

  • This type of insurance is not recommended for business and commercial use as it is very limited
  • If you are at fault your van is not covered
  • Not covered if your van is stolen
  • No protection from damage caused by fire

Third Party, Fire & Theft

Advantages

  • Covers all third parties in the event of damage, injury or loss of life due to accident
  • You are covered if your van is stolen
  • Covered from damage caused by fire

Disadvantages

  • If you are at fault your van is not covered so you won’t be offered repairs or a replacement vehicle

Fully Comprehensive

Advantages

  • Recommended insurance for commercial van users as it provides more cover
  • You are covered if your van is stolen
  • Covered from damage caused by fire
  • If you have an accident your van will be repaired or replaced regardless of who is at fault

Disadvantages
